Film clip analysis –
Super 8
The clip we are
analysing is a clip from the film super 8. In this small scene, a few of the signs we see are the
clothes they are wearing. They are making there own smaller movie in the actual
film so in this small clip we see them filming. One of the characters is
wearing clothes to make her look older to play the part of a wife in the small
movie they are making.
At the beginning of
this scene, they are practising their lines for a movie. But when the train
comes, they are rushed into filming.
They’re all dressed rather naturally in jeans and t-shirts showing that
they are just young kids wanting to film a movie.
There is no music in
the background because it would add to much noise and it would sound to jumbled
up when the train passes by. As we see, when the train passes, the scene
becomes louder and were are less able to hear them speaking. But hearing and
seeing how big the train is when it passes them also emphasises the danger when
the train crashes into the on coming car.
But when we see all of
them rushing to get the camera rolling, the scene calms down for a few seconds
until the train passes to really give us a sense of the train. But once the
train has passed, one of the characters turns to see the on coming car. Again
there is no music, just the sound of the train and the raised voices of the
characters.
Actually seeing the
character notice the car and just watching it until he realises what happens
makes the small scene a little more interesting. During the clip where we are
watching the car and train about to collide, we still here the voices of the
other characters carrying on with the filming, telling us that they haven’t
noticed what’s going on.
When the car collides
with the train it causes a massive crash, which then causes the children to
start panicking, and they start to rush out knocking the camera over in the
process. The camera is still recording from when they were filming, and this is
relevant to the plot later on. Also
on the shot of the fallen camera, we see that the shot is then zoomed in
slightly to show viewers that the camera is important.
Just after the train
crashes into the car, rather than neat cuts in each clips/scene, the camera
turns quickly on to the faces of the kids to show urgency and the rush for them
to get out of the way.
